Marilyn McGarry was born on December 4, 1932, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. While backpacking through Europe in the late 1950s, she met Michael in London, UK. They married in 1960, back in Winnipeg, and had 3 daughters: Susan, Nancy and Debra. They moved to Montreal in 1976 and then relocated to Calgary in 1997, where Marilyn lived until her passing.
All her life, Marilyn was an accomplished piano player. She played everything from classical music (her favourite was Robert Schumann) to the light operas of Gilbert and Sullivan, and she greatly admired Glenn Gould. She served as choir director and organist at St. John’s United Church, in Pointe Claire, Montreal, for many years. She also taught piano to children and adults everywhere she lived. Her love of music - her deep knowledge of music - and her desire to share it with others was one of her defining traits.
Marilyn’s sister Shirley passed away before her. Marilyn is survived by her husband, her daughters, her brother, Alan, and her grandsons Tyler, Jake, Rowan, Brody and Evan. We will miss her very much.
